Rock-A-Shacka crew are proud to announce our new release of classic and previously unreleased Prince Buster productions - ‘Roll On Charles Street’ on CD/LP. Continuing from where we left off with our successful release of Prince Buster’s ‘Let’s Go To The Dance’ we hope you enjoy our latest Ska, Ballard and shuffle selection from the ‘King Of Ska’ Prince Buster!
The compilation will feature beautiful vocals / instrumentals from the likes of Prince Buster, Derrick Morgan, Patsy, Slim Smith, the mighty Don Drummond and Buster All Stars.
Several incredible tracks have never been released to the public before!
We bring you the alternative and raw take of “Prince Of Peace”, a deadly and previously unreleased instrumental by the genius Don Drummond titled “Vietnam”, a truly wicked instrumental titled “Charles Street Cowboy” (dig the cowbell !)…..a lovely duet with Prince Buster and Slim Smith titled “I’m Sorry”…..plus a deadly take of “Summertime” by Buster All Stars.
We have also included classics like the Ska version of “Hey Train” a cover version of Duke Ellington’s “A Train”, which was only pressed on dub plate handed to the core sound men of Prince Buster’s “Voice Of The People” sound system.
Roland Alphonso’s “Roll On Charles Street” is again from dub plate and apparently recorded at the same period as the masterpiece and rude boy classic “Rude Rude Rudie” (aka “Don’t Throw Stones”)…..the classic “Stop That Train” by The Spanish Town Skabeats an original take to the famous Jamaican rock steady classic by Keith and Tex for Derrick Harriot…..to name a few !

デューク・エリントンの「A列車で行こう」を疾走感溢れるスカにアレンジした「Hey Train」は、当時バスターのサウンドマンにだけ手渡されたダブプレートとして有名。コレクターであればいつか手に入れたいと思っていた幻の一曲。
バスターの代表曲であり、ルードボーイ・チューンの最高傑作とも言える「Don’t Throw Stones」、そして同時期の録音と思われるマイナートーンの流麗かつキラーな「Roland Alphonso - Roll On Charles Street」は、某イギリスのサウンドマンが秘蔵していたスペシャル。
キース&テックスのカバーにより大ヒットしたジャマイカンスタンダードのオリジナルテイク「Stop That Train - Spanish Town SkaBeats」は、バスタープロダクションの真髄とも言えるキラーボーカルスカにして、アルバム初収録。
そのほか、ブラックモスリム、黒人解放運動の盟友モハメド・アリに捧げられた「Prince Of Peace」の別テイクやドン・ドラモンドの未発表曲等、世界初の音源化を多数収録した、ロッカシャッカ渾身の作品にして、プリンス・バスターのスピリットが冴え渡る最高のスカ・セレクション。

Professionally known as Prince Buster, born Cecil Bustamente Campbell [28thMay 1938 – 8thSeptember 2016,] was named for the founder of the Jamaican Labour party, Alexander Bustamente. He was arguably thecrucial figure in the transition from Jamaican shuffle boogie to early ska. If anyone can claim to have pioneered ska, he can.
Buster was actually born on Orange Street where his family lived. As a child he had been sent to live with family in the country, where he had sung with his grandmother and other family members in various churches, joining in old time hymns like “When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder”.
Upon returning to Jamaica in the mid-1940s, he attended the Central School and St Ann’s School. After leaving school in the early 1950s, he gravitated towards the various sound systems playing in the Orange Street area, notably the crossroads of Charles Street and Luke Lane just off Orange Street. This crossroads became known as ‘Soulsville Centre’, where sound systems - Tom the Great Sebastian, and Son, the Junior Sebastian – would set up and play records. Tom the Great Sebastian was Buster’s favourite – Tom saw off competition from other early sounds like Count Nick and Count Buckram. Buster recalled to this writer hearing Tom playing Fats Domino’s 1953 hit “Let’s Go To The Mardi Gras”: "I went totally freak out, an' kept telling Tom: play it back, play it back. Some line in a the song jus' carry me a step beyond, an' I jus' went with it...".

プリンス・バスター、本名ブスタマンテ・キャンベル（1938年5月28日生 − 2016年9月8日没）は、ジャマイカ労働党の創立者、アレキサンダー・ブスタマンテにちなんで名付けられた。シャッフル、ブギーからアーリー・スカへの過渡期における最重要人物であることは異論をまたない。スカのパイオニアだと自ら名乗ることが許されるとすれば、このプリンス・バスターをおいて他はない。
オレンジ・ストリートに生まれ、その後家族とともに引っ越した田舎で、祖母や教会に通う家族から歌の手ほどきを受け、賛美歌を歌うようになる。
1940年代の半ば、街へもどった彼は、セントラル・スクールやセント・アンズ・スクールへ通い、50年代はじめに退学すると、オレンジ・ストリート、とりわけ、その外れに位置するチャールズ・ストリートとルーク・レインの角でプレイするサウンドシステムに引き寄せられていった。トム・ザ・グレイト・セバスチャンとその息子ジュニア・セバスチャンのセットがプレイするこの交差点は、「ソウルズビル・センター」として知られるようになる。カウント・ニックやカウント・バックラムなどのライバル・サウンドとは一線を画すトム・ザ・グレイト・セバスチャンは、バスターのお気に入りだった。トムがファッツ・ドミノの1953年のヒット曲「Let’s Go To The Mardi Gras」をプレイしたときのことを思いお起こし、筆者にこのように語った。「俺は完全にぶっ飛んでしまってトムにこう叫んだ。もう一回かけてくれ、もう一回かけてくれ、と。曲のある一節に興奮して、もう自分自身を止めることができなくなったんだ･･･」
